My knowledge of geneology is not the greatest but have been able to find info from different sources. I sometimes find others researching the same family tree but a different branch of it. Most of the time the information is the same but sometimes their info [such as date of birth], varies a little from what I have found. Enough info is the same that I feel it is the same person. Confusing! I assume they are more knowledgeable than me in finding info. My biggest problem is that my computer skills are not very good. I'm lucky that a family member started the family tree many years ago [before computers] but I didn't get interested in it until after he had died. I have basic info from him and have been able to add to it. We are having a family reunion in a couple of weeks and I'm sharing what info I have with them. I find it very addicting! Any help is greatly appreciated

According to the write up on the history of the school Robert Spier was descended from the Spiers of Kerseland Mill which is in Dalry (don't know how well you know the area).

According to Sp indexes (sorry no credits) There were Robert Speirs born in Ayrshire in 1776 in Dalry to Allan, 1775 in Dalry to James and 1777 in Dreghorn to John.  Perhaps there is more info in the full record that would help you.   There's also a marriage of Robert Speir to Margaret Gibson in 1811

Thank you for your help
I have most of that info but I'm still unable to connect to our branch of the family. I had the thought last night that we must be connected through an uncle or great uncle to the John Speir that started the school. After our reunion I will have the time to follow up on that idea.

Though an old topic, hopefully the following marriage may advance your search:
Spier, John, jun. on 27/11/1857 at Newhouse, parish of Dalry by the Rev. Robert Stevenson. to Margaret, only daughter of William Brown, Esq.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
