COMPLETED - Occupation
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 02:33 BST (UK) »
Looking for help with occupation on First line
N??? & Grocer, possibly News??
I'm saying it starts with N as the list line in the clip says Nurse to me...

its from 1861 English census for James and Sarah Upperton, Headley, Hampshire, (district 6)

Thanks in advance

Just pointing out that the occupation you are querying is for wife Sarah.

It may make a difference to interpretation.

I am saying it is the word NURSE as in the lower one you have cited.

The script is more condensed and the dot is not relevant

My opinion only ;D

would agree with Sue!

There's a 'dot' above Grocer which is irrelevant too.

James' occupation has been written over two lines, so part of it appears against Sarah's name.

So his occupation appears as:
Boot and Shoe maker employing
1 man & grocer

You can see that the two lines are bracketed together at the left-hand end of the lines.

Agree with Jennifer.  The B in Boot is not fully formed.

The 'Nurse' refers to a Sarah Gidley, a visitor in the household of John Fullick living 2-3 houses lower down the page.
