John Kennett and Mary Quested
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 10:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice or help regarding these two ancestors of mine.

John Kennett and Mary Quested were married by licence on 7 November 1732 in Shadoxhurst. The licence was dated 2 September 1732 and according to this both John and Mary were widowed.

I'm trying to find a suitable first marriage for both but so far have had no luck. Also the licence says they were 'both of Sellinge' (which I take to be either Sellindge or Selling) yet the only Kennetts I've found are in Wye. Does anyone know of any Kennett or Quested  families in Sellinge?

Many thanks
Matt

Hi
It looks like there was a Quested family at Sellinge
James Quested married Martha Goddan there 24.11.1696

I thought it was  one of their sons who married Mary but looks like not.
They had their children baptised at Brabourne  Mary 5,9,1697-23.10.1697,Martha 28,1,1699,Godden 29,11,1792 ,James 31,1,1703-17,6,1719,Mary 24,2,1705 Elizabeth 11,1,1707,and son Stephen 20 ,5,1711

It looks like there is a James Quested who married a Mary Moorland 17.9.1729 at Brabourne who presumably must be the same one who married Martha in 1697 as the son James is already dead.

I can't see a burial after 1729 though.

There is a burial for Stephen Quested 21.2.1731
but in that case I can't see a marriage.

Not sure if that helps.

Many thanks for that info. There's also a John Quested (or James possibly) who married Mary Miller in the 1690s. I had thought it was their daughter Mary who married John Kennett, however as she was a widow when she married John that can't be the case.

I'm still puzzled though as to whether Sellinge is Selling, or Sellindge.

Thanks again
Matt

Hi Matt.
Hope this doesn't put a spanner in the works! But, there is a Charles Quested, farmer down the road from us,near Sandwich, kent.Selling is about 10-15 miles from us. There are also Questeds near Bridge,Canterbury. Not a very common name.
Good luck!
Carol.

Hi Carol

Nope, no spanner in the works yet :)

I've found quite a lot of Questeds in Brabourne, Wye, and Selling around the 17th to 18th centuries but so far I haven't worked out who 'Mary Quested' was the widow of. If I could find a first marriage for her to a 'Quested' and then his burial it would help me. Also I've not yet found John Kennett's first marriage but if I can find that then I will at least have something.

I'm checking through various Quested family Wills that I've collected to see if any of those help.
