Joseph Turnbull 2656493 Coldstream guards
« on: Wednesday 28 June 17 21:22 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

According to the war graves commission website, there is a Joseph Turnbull, whom died in Tunisia, aged 27 in 1943. His service number was 2656493 and he was in the 2nd battalion coldstream guards.

This might be a relative of mine, but I am not sure. Would there be any newspaper articles relating to his death? Something that might give any information of family?

thanks

Where was your Joseph living. It may appear in newspapers local to that area.

The Army Roll of Honour gives his birthplace and residence as Carlisle; does that fit with your family?

He was born in Wigton registration district, so Carlisle wouldn't be far off. I think he married, according to a relative

This might be a classic Catch 22 situation, and I'm sure some-one will correct me if I'm wrong.

To determine if he is a relation, you should get his service record from the MOD.

But the only way to get the service record is to prove you are related.

Catch 22, I think.

That is what I understand. You don't have to be related though the information you get may not be as comprehensive as that given to relations

Just to clarify the position re records. If he died more than 25 years ago then anyone can apply for the full records. They do not need a death certificate in this case because his records will record his death while serving.
