Haha, I'd need a bit more information to start searching (which you've probably already done). Google comes up with a number of WW1 William Turnbulls but whether one of them is the chap in the photo, I have no idea. Birthplace/residency and DOB or approx. age in 1914?

Mike
Thanks Mike,

Now if you could just tell me what regiment he was in......!!!

Hello Mike,

I have indeed done all that!  I found no less than 200 William Turnbulls in the WW1 Forces.  Trouble is that on three different censuses he was listed as William, Thomas and William Thomas and on other documents he has 3 different birthplaces!  He was 34 in 1914 so probably not one of the first to go and now it has been suggested that he might even have been the equivalent of the WW1 Home Guard.  His uniform is unkempt and unsoldierly so the photo might have been taken at the battlefront.  It's impossible to tell!
