I have a letter written by James Speir [1705-1741] to his brother Robert Speir [1703-1801]. In this letter, dated Feb. 26, 1741, he says that he had just buried his only child named Nelly, who died from measles, and that he is leaving most of his estate to his brother Robert because he was growing weaker. The information that I have for James Speir from that time period says that he was married to Rebecca Thomson and they had 4 children: George, Hugh, Rebecca [died young], and Helen[died 1741], which is the same year that James died. I suppose George and Hugh could have also died young. Does anyone know how "Nelly" fits in? Could it be a nickname for Helen?

I would say the Nelly is definitely short for Helen.  ;)
