Need help finding Emily Crewe in 1871 census
« on: Friday 30 June 17 06:58 BST (UK) »
My gr.grandmother Emily Crewe arrived in Townsville Queensland Aust. on the Scottish Prince aged 18 years.  The only other information I have is her marriage certificate dated 30/6/1883
where she states her age to be 22 years, parents James Crewe, solicitor and Fannie Hoskins.
Place of birth London, Middlesex. (extracts attached).  I believe her parents may have been
James Crewe, plasterer born 1829 Tetbury, Glouc. and Elizabeth Ann Hodges born 1832 Middlesex. Their marriage was 1850 St. Anne Soho.  The 1861 census for Lambeth Surrey records this couple with 3 children James, Elizabeth and John.   Elizabeth Crewe died in 1866.  James Crewe remarried in 1870 to Fanny Burbridge.  The 1871 census for Battersea Surrey records James Crewe and Fanny aged 23 years with Edwin 6 months. Also recorded are the children from James' previous marriage James 20, Eliz. 16, John 10 and also EMMA E 8 years.

My question is - does anyone think that Emma E could be my gr.grandmother Emily because
Emma E was how the enumerator heard the name Emily?   Emily would have been only 3 or 4 years when her mother died so probably only remembers Fanny (Burbridge) as her mother.  Regarding the occupation of solicitor on the marriage certificate that could also have been
what the Minister heard - the occupation of plasterer would have been unknown in a mining community in Northern Queensland in 1883.

I would like to find a birth registration or baptism for Emily.  I have located baptism records for her supposed siblings James in St Martin in the Field Middlesex, Elizabeth in St. Pancras, Camden (surname Crow) and John in Holy Trinity, Lambeth so no consistent church. All my efforts to find possible parents of James Crewe and Fanny Hoskins have been unsuccessful.

All suggestions appreciated.
Regards, Jen.

Thankyou Rosie, yes you have found the Emma E Crewe I referred to in 1871 census. So that
does eliminate my Emily Crewe from that family, yet I cannot locate her elsewhere in 1871.

Emily Crewe arrived in Townsville on 16th December 1878 leaving London on 6th September 1878,
so she was not in the UK for 1881 census.

Jen.

Regarding the occupation of solicitor on the marriage certificate that could also have been

Not saying she did but Emily wouldn't have been the first [or the last] person to inflate father's occupation when there was no-one to contest it...

Rosie, thankyou for the extensive research you have done on my behalf it is greatly appreciated.  I am now considering the possibility that there was no marriage and Emily may have been baptised/registered in her mother's name.  Perhaps even her mother's name is in doubt.  She may have been in difficult circumstances to have considered emigration alone at such a young age.

Josey, thankyou for your thoughts, I agree this is a possibility although I can't imagine why this would be necessary in a rough mining community.  I have always thought that if her father was a solicitor she would not have been considering emigration let alone being permitted to do it.
However, I have seen letters written by her in perfect script and know that she educated her children well, two of them becoming teachers.

Regards,
Jen.
