Henry Thomas and Bridget Feeney ,Dublin
« on: Friday 30 June 17 11:31 BST (UK) »
Hi All
Henry Thomas born 1862 Dublin and Bridget Feeney born 1866 Dublin married in St Patrick's Pro Cathedral.Newark,New Jersey 26th Dec 1888
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZ5W-C8Q

They were back in Dublin before 1901 and possibly just after their marriage as they appear to have a son Henry age 12 in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Wood_Quay/Golden_Lane/1341187/
1911
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Merchant_s_Quay/Braithwaite_Street/55786/

They dont appear to have bothered to have registered most of their childrens births and those that they did have different names than the names on the census
eg Essie reg as Mary Esther ,Catherine reg as Bridget and i also found 2 infant deaths whose births are not registered.

What i am looking for is any travel documentation to or from U S A and if son Henry was possibly born in U S A.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Whitener which i  thought was a painter from his 1901 census return is actually a cloth bleacher.
http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/w.html

His father John was a shoe maker

edited to add
looking at his 1901 Census return he specifically say's Whitener House
so i presume he was a painter

I found (on one of the pay sites) an 1889 Newark City Directory.  There doesn't appear to be any Henry Thomas' in the directory.

In case other family members sailed to America:
Edward Thomas, shoemaker
James Thomas, painter
John Thomas, slippermaker

Of course, if Henry stayed in America for any length of time, his occupation could have changed once he arrived.

I will continue looking later today.  ;)

He doesn't appear to be in the 1890 Newark City Directory.

He could have lived in another part of New Jersey, or even another state.  My one and only ancestor who lived in the states (for a short time in the 1840s) lived at various times in Newark and Jersey City.  I don't know why he moved around - perhaps to find work.

Hi Lisa
no point in looking for them after their marriage as i have just found a birth in Dublin 1889 for an unnamed female born 8th October 1889 last one on page.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1889/02454/1912186.pdf

so its most likely they headed back to Dublin straight after their marriage 1888.

I was more interested to find when they left Dublin prior to their marriage or if their son Henry was born in America, though the census says he was born Dublin about 1888 i cant find a birth for him or an unnamed male.

Thank you for your efforts much appreciated.

Backtracking...
- you are quite certain that the marriage in 1888 is for "your" Henry Thomas?
- it seems possible that Bridget arrived in America either on the same ship as Henry or with a family member since she would have been, at the oldest, about 22 years old (perhaps she met Henry while sailing to America).
- do you if Bridget had any siblings?
- could Henry's siblings have also travelled to America?
- perhaps Henry asked her to marry him right before he sailed back home?

I have not yet found them arriving nor leaving America, although there was a possible arrival for Bridget:
City of Rome, left Liverpool, England and arrived New York, New York on 26 October 1888.  Bridget Feeney, age 22, Servant?, Irish
