GRO Certificates v NLI Church Records
« on: Friday 30 June 17 15:59 BST (UK) »
Hello!!

What's everyone's opinion reegarding GRO certs & NLI Church Records?

For me, the certificates on irishgenalogy or from GRO itself may not always be accurate. I'd rather go with a handwritten record from a Parish.

I found an example of this regarding a great-great uncle. The cert from GRO states he was born 4th December 1864, but the Parish record for his baptism has him baptised 24th November 1864. Plus the cert has him in one Parish, but the baptism is in a different Parish.

Hope this helps!  ;D
The surnames, which I am interested in are; Maternal side: Ryan, Kevin, Grant, Grady, Gleeson, Walsh, Dwyer, Paternal side: O' Dwyer, Woodlock, Rochford & Britton - all in Tipperary; and Kelly and Hoynes in Laois.

Ryan, Campbell, Luttrell, Grant, Grahame, Bainbridge and Brown in Queensland, Australia

Tighe in Victoria, Australia.

Grant in Philadelphia, Sullivan and Penny in New York; and Britton in Connecticut

It might if you put a link to whatever it is, so people can form opinions.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Maybe the date of birth registered was not actually the date he was born. His birth may have been in one parish but the baptism in another...maybe his mother's parish...or vice versa.

The Cert probably has him in the REGISTRATION DISTRICT!!

Who knows?  As there is no link to whatever we are supposed to be forming an opinion on!!

No need to be nasty about it  :(

The Birth Cert was registered in 1864 in the District of Kilcooley in the Union of Urlingford, Co. Tipperary, and states he was born 2nd December 1864 in an area called The Commons. The registration area on irishgenealogy.ie for it is Callan.

The image from the Baptism Register in the village of Gortnahoe states clearly that he was baptised November 24th 1864.

My first thought was that birth was registered late so to avoid an extra fee they falsified his birthday.  I don't know how long they had to register a birth though.

Had the parents recently married?  Was he born less than 9 months after the wedding?

It's extremely common for a birth cert date to be later than a baptism, particularly in rural areas where farm work came before trips to register babies.
