My email has been hacked

Yes, either of those, especially if you remove them from your PC after the backup, so that they are not accessible.  A cloud drive is also good.  Every so often I give a friend a copy, in case the house burns down.  (Seriously.)  There are lots of internet articles about good backup procedures, including checking that your backup actually works and isn't corrupt.

Thanks for information. The only reason this reply is late is because I no longer get emails nor can I send emails. I did send email to Aol but did not get reply. Tried to change password but could not do this. My IP is TAlk Talk via Aol.

Thanks Martin. What if I deleted my Aol software ( I have installation disc ) and then reinstall it?? Just a thought. I am not too good sorting IT problem ( Silver Surfer)

Victoria, I can't think how the AOL software would have any effect on your address book.  I think a local friend would be able to help you best.

Thanks Martin. Don`t know what happened but I received an email ( your reply ) as a matter of fact I have not received replies from my postings  from roots chat for some time, I usually log on to look for replies Also I had spam ( just one ) My Address Book is still empty. As long as I receive emails I am happy ( just in case some are important)

Victoria, when you reply to an earlier comment, or start a new one, under the box where you type you message, you will see the words "Attachments and other options".  If you click on that, you will see a small 'check box' "Notify me of replies by email".  If that isn't ticked, you won't get any notification.  That might be your problem with not getting any updates. 

It is your choice whether you want updates.  Sometimes, if I post some good advice, I DON'T check it as most of the replies will just be 'thanks' messages.  It's OK to get them, but they can be time-consuming.

Some years ago.... now...   I/ we were advised to have the first address in your address book to be one that would come straight back to yourself... in case this happened... then you would know straight away...?

MY personal solution was to 'copy and paste' names in address book and put in a folder - NOT called addresses? 
and then empty my address book.
Of course this has the inconvenience of having to type the address in each time you need to send some one an email.... I get round this by finding the persons last email to me and then replying to it...

NO addresses in contact list..
