What does C.A.M.S R.E stand for?
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 11:11 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born in 1901, lived in Bethnal Green with his aunt's family in 1911 after the death of both parents, and married in Dover in 1922. On the marriage certificate his occupation as shown as 1st Class Motor Mechanic but he has also entered C.A.M.S R.E as his rank suggesting he was in the Royal Engineers at the end of WW1. Can anyone tell me what C.A.M.S (or C.O.M.S/C.Q.M.S) might stand for? Thanks!

Could well be CQMS RE - Company Quartermaster Sergeant Royal Engineers.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

At age 20-21 he would be a bit young to be a CQMS in 1922.

ShaunJ makes a good point, can you post a copy of the bit of the marriage cert that has the abbreviation?

Thanks for quick response - am trying to find out how he came to be in Dover (and can't wait for the 1921 census!). Jpg attached - the rank is not his father's as he was a house-painter and died before 1911. I wondered if the M.S was anything to do with Motor Services...

It's the father of the groom so he could have been the Quartermaster. Think maxD got it right.

the rank is not his father's as he was a house-painter and died before 1911.

As the bride's father is described as a Painter, it's possible that the fathers' occupations were switched in error.

Thanks all! I can now see that the entries for father's occupation have been put against the wrong person. My grandmother's father was indeed in the army (he moved down to Dover with the Forfar and Kincardine Artillery). I hadn't known the later stages of his career so you've just sorted that for me!
