Henry Leau Appa

I am researching a distant relative. His name was Henry Leau Appa, born abt. 1830 in Canton, China. He emigrated to Australia in 1855 and married Mary McGarry 3rd Feb. 1859 in Sydney, NSW, where he had opened a shop on George Street.

He died on 13th May 1864. Does anybody have details of the circumstances of his death, as all I know is that he was shot on board a ship traveling from Sydney to Hong Kong.

Hi Dave

Have you ever seen your ancestors name written in Chinese script?  It would be interesting to know his actual name translated today from Cantonese.  Mr Leau Appa looks very 'I'll just write it like it sounds' to me.

Do you know from where in 'Canton' he was from?!
