George henry Costins
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 12:31 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone im new to this so here goes :) im looking for information on George Henry costins born around 1862 in newport monmouthshire but resided in Cheltenham most of his life, i have no birth certificate nor baptism. I suspect his mother was a Elizabeth Costins born 1826 to James Costins and Hannah Gold but with no proof of his birth as of yet i obviously cant be 100% sure on this. According to his marriage certificate he was illegitimate so no father listed. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated, i have been stuck on this for years! i am also looking for birth and death information on suspected grandfather James Costins born around 1800-1806.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

It doesn't look as though George's birth was registered under Costins or Bullock so no way of obtaining a cert.

Elizabeth & Benjamin married in 1868

Ok, so there is a costins birth in 1861 newport, MMN Beavington. Wrong first name though

And a possible beavington  connection to the Bullock surname 1854 marriage.

All a bit tenuous, but might be worth checking further.

Thank you 🙂  I'd too noticed that he's listed as nephew in the census but then in the 1881 census he was listed as a stepson so iv been unsure of which he actually was, although Elizabeth's oldest sister Ann was married to a Charles bullock but they emigrated with their children before George's birth and iv been unable to find any proof that he could possibly be theirs so I do wonder if maybe they just used bullock to cover up the illegitimate birth at the time. As for the birth certificate that's what I thought, iv only ever been able to find one possibility which was a Henry james costins 1861 Newport, but the parents are listed as Elizabeth bevington and Henry Costins I managed to trace Elizabeth to South hamlet of Gloucester but there was no sign of Henrys exsistance what so ever.

As you are unable to find the death of James COSTIN(S) and although Hannah COSTINS death is registered 1853 - Cheltenham - no entry on Ancestry, Gloucestershire burials for Cheltenham - did they become Non-conformists ???

Forest of Dean Family History Records

1872 Hannah Maria COSTINS - parents: James & Maria : Monmouth Methodist

1874: Jos James COSTINS - parent Jos James & Maria : (Non-conformists records)

James COSTINS married Maria COWLES - 1872 Monmouth District.

Thank you that never occurred to me, I'll look into that🙂 I managed to find Hannah costins death and obituary but as you said no burial so it's possible. As for James it was revealed in the newspapers that he had been having having an affair for years and eventually got caught and was taken to court for it, he did proclaim his innocence but was found guilty, he managed to get a retrial but apparently died in 1852 before the retrial happened but that was just reported in the paper iv found no other evidence than that so I assumed that maybe the family has disowned him as he had left the family home. Although iv noticed that on his daughters marriage certificates it does not state he is deceased untill 94 is it possible maybe he left Gloucester altogether and started again elsewhere? Or did they just not state whether they were dead or alive back then? Iv also been unable to find his baptism but found his siblings so I can't help but wonder if James was his actual name as I can't find anything other than census's.
