Edward & Caroline Tester 1851 Census
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 17:01 BST (UK) »
Edward Tester bach & Caroline Newington both of the parish married Lewes 15  Jun 1815,  Caroline was a daughter of Joel Newington a Miller of Withernden Mill & Mary Noakes bap 26 Dec 1800 Ticehurst.

I have located a likely candidate for a baptised of an Edward Tester 30 Dec 1782 at Balcombe son of Edward & Mary Tester. But this is just a 'best fit' and I may well be on the wrong track.

I have located 4 children to the couple where Edward was described as a Miller:
Samuel bap 1819 Ticehurst bur 1821 Burwash
Edward 1822 - 1823 Burwash
Caroline bap 1824 Burwash.  [Is this the same Caroline who married Stephen Waters in 1848 at Laughton]
William bap 1826 Burwash.

I am looking for them in the 1841 & 1851 census.

In the 1841 census I located an Edward [aged 53 farmer] & Caroline [aged 40] Tester with children of Caroline aged 17, William 15 and a child Emily 7 at East Hoathly. [Registration district: Uckfield; Archive reference: HO107; Piece number: 1118; Book number: 6; Folio number: 14; Page number: 22].

Located a baptism 1834 for Emily dau of an Edward & Caroline Tester .

Questions:

Is the 1841 census 'my' Edward & Caroline Tester?
Where are the couple in 1851?

The Keep has a record for a Caroline TESTER of Laughton, wife of Edward; grant of administration 21 Mar 1851.  If this is the correct Edward then he is deceased before the 30 Mar 1851 census.  However there is a burial for Caroline Tester aged 49 years at Laughton which seems to indicate this cannot be the same person referred to in The Keep record mentioned above. ???

Laughton is where Caroline Tester married.

An 1851 record for Edward Tester a widower and his daughter Emily is at Laughton [Registration district: Hailsham; Archive reference: HO107; Piece number: 1638; Folio: 315; Page: 10].  This record seems appropriate given Edward is a widower in 1851.

The unknowns:
Where was Edward Testor baptised?
Are the 1841 & 1851 census finds appropriate?
Or am I totally off track?

There is also an administration of Susannah Newington spinster late of Ticehurst Sussex who died
12 May 1844 admin to Caroline Waters wife of Joseph Waters farmer of Hailsham (I think this should be Stephen Waters)
admin granted 12 December 1866 to Caroline the granddaughter of Joel Newington and father of Susannah.
Based on the description Caroline had to handle Susannah estate in 1866 even though she died 1844 along with Joel's in 1866.

Using new GRO index
Caroline Tester age 47 death registered Hailsham Union December quarter Vol. 7 page 299

This would be the wife of Edward.

ADDED
There is a death of an Edward Tester age 82 also registered at Hailsham in 1869

Census records
1851 Edward Tester a widow age 63 has a brother Stephen living with him age 53 both born at Waldron Sussex.
1861 census Edward Tester (transcribed as Sester on ancestry) age74 and brother Stephen age63
still living with him, both born Waldron.

Edward dies 1869

1871 census
Stephen Tester age72 (transcribed as 12 on ancestry) is living with Caroline Waters and her husband Stephen.
Caroline Waters wife of Stephen being listed as a grand daughter of Joel Newington on probate records.

So Waldron Parish Records are the next clue since we know Edward and Stephen are brothers.
