Alexander Rollo died in Buenos Aires
« on: Sunday 02 July 17 10:57 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I am on a mission to find out a bit more - anything more, in fact - about Alexander having already posted on the Fife, Scotland pages.

Alexander was the first son and first child of Alexander Rollo 1805-1865 and Elizabeth Duncan 1811-1871. I have attached section of a Merchant Navy Registered Ticket No.410909 for him issued at Perth (Scotland) on 23 May 1848 that shows he "First went to Sea as 'Boy'."

In 1851 he was residing at Coultra, Parish of Balmerino, Fife, Scotland with his maternal Grandparents George and Elspet Duncan.

There is another document, also attached, that shows a possible death for him in Buenos Ayres [sic] in 1854 age 21 years.

There is no record of a death for Alexander in the Scottish records - or the rest of the UK that I can find

Is there any way the death record can be linked more positively to Alexander?

Would someone from Balmerino say they were born in Dundee? I don't know the answer but it seems like a key question.

Hi Shaun,

I'm not disputing your query which is an excellent valid point with excellent observation!

What I would say though is, it may have been assumed 'Dundee' simply because of the proximity of Balmerino on the banks of the River Tay which is between Fife & Dundee?

To further that thought, it was not Alexander himself who stated 'Dundee' as he was deceased.

I am not saying it is the 'Alexander' in question  ;)

Hi Annie

Yes, you have replied to this. I PM'd Gadget (previous post on Fife page) and asked if he considered it OK to duplicate the thread here and he reckoned it would do no harm.

No intention of upsetting the system  :-[

Hi ShaunJ

Balmerino and Dundee are diagonally opposite each other on the south and north banks of the River Tay.  Dundee was a ship-building and major shipping port and a sailor would have his Board of Trade "Ticket" issued there.

Alexander's demise is not recorded anywhere other than on the old record I attached.

I suppose I'm hoping someone in South America may read this and have the answer

Back again attaching a wee bit more information about the entry on the second image I attached to the first post - if it's of any help.

Hi CF,

I noticed the 'Ticket' was issued in Perth, not sure if that may be of relevance regarding Dundee/Balmerino?

Hi Annie

Nice to hear from you again.  From what I recall, Seamen could choose to have their "Ticket" sent to a port of preference.  Although less used nowadays, Perth used to be one such port.
