Hardy & Smith Marriage
« on: Tuesday 04 July 17 09:03 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys

I am getting myself a bit tangled up with a myriad of Hardy's that all seem to have the same name, place of birth, dates of birth etc !!! so am going back to basics.

I have a marriage for John Hardy (b abt.1804 in Haltwhistle) to Elizabeth Smith (b abt. 1801 Farlam.  The marriage took place 24 August 1822 in Farlam - details are:
First name(s)    ELIZABETH
Last name    SMITH
Marriage year    1822
Marriage day    24
Marriage month    Aug
Place    FARLAM
Groom's first name(s)    John
Groom's last name    Hardy
Groom's parish    -
Bride's first name(s)    Elizabeth
Bride's last name    Smith
Bride's parish    Brampton
County    Cumberland
Country    England
Record set    Northumberland and Durham Marriages
Category    Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Subcategory    Marriages & divorces

Is anyone able to actually look at the record rather than the transcription to tell me if any other detail is available (am hoping for fathers names!!!).

Thanks

No parental into on marriages prior to 1837 (with the relatively rare exception of "Dade registers") .

family search link https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJN8-4ZX
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVMF-WXM (two dates, maybe banns and a marriage? )

the film (as a scanned image) may be available at a family history centre for you to search personally.

The record in the first posting looks like it has been taken from a register of banns as it is in Northumberland and Durham records which accords well with John Hardy's birthplace. Although there will be no father's name designated, there will be two or more witness names which may be of help.

If every entry from the banns registers (six in total) has been enetered into the records, this would account for the multiple mentions of the same person with the same antecedents.

Hi had a look at the records for Farlam.  There is nothing about either John or Elizabeth's parents in marriage record. The marriage was by banns and the record says John of this parish and Elizabeth of Brampton.  John signed his name and Elizabeth made her mark.
The banns list them as both being of this parish.

Hi, thanks so much for checking that for me ! Interestingly, I didn't know that John was of Farlam, the 1841 and 1851 census's which I think are him, says he was born in Haltwhistle so I assumed that was where he was from.  !!!  I wonder if its worth me looking for a baptism for him in Farlam rather than Haltwhistle, as they are different counties aren't they ?  I haven't got a baptism for either John or Elizabeth, their daughter Margaret (my 2 x great grandmother) was born in Hylton, Durham and her birth certificate states father John was a potter and mother was Elizabeth Hardy formerly Smith.  The census returns state John was born 1804 Haltwhistle, and Elizabeth 1801 Farlam.

Seems like they are common names  :(

In a marriage register, "of this parish" or "of Farlam" indicate a person's place of abode.  It has nothing to do with the place they were born.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

They are different counties but not very far apart about 10-12 miles.  As Geoff says he may have just been living/working in Farlam at that time.
