George BEST, born 1829, Chertsey, Surrey
« on: Tuesday 04 July 17 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hello,

There is a possibility George BEST migrated from Melbourne to NZ (Port Chalmers) aboard the "Bruce" in October 1862.   He had been transported to Tasmania in 1845 and moved to Melbourne on the Shamrock on 18/01/1852 with a Conditional Pardon (sentence would have been complete on 16/05/1853 after 10 years).

His parents were Frederick BEST and Eliza BEST (nee ABEL), last known address in 1841 was Brighthelmstone, Sussex, and he probably had six siblings, John, Richard, Frederick, William, Mary and Sophia.

Can SKS find any information in NZ please ???

For the moment,

BAC3

Hi BAC3,

If the above death is your chap, his burial location is Ohariu Valley Anglican.

Find a Grave gives some details.

And the Ohariu George Best's probate - which adds little to the search.

Hello BAC

Were you aware that the listing for "a George BEST" on the voyage to NZ described above, also had a man named as "John BEST" who had exactly the same age details as those of George BEST.  ???

I note you mention "there is a possibility" (that this is the George BEST you seek) ... but have you viewed a scan of the passenger list (mostly these give additional details )  ???
Incidentally, the ages of "George and John" is given as 30 years ... so bc 1832.   ???

Hello again BAC3

*  Where did you get the information you already have, re: George BEST ??

*  Are you working backwards from a known source, which in turn leads to George ??

*  Do you have an occupation for George ?

*  Why do you think that George BEST may have come to New Zealand ??

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you all for your inputs.   The general consensus appears to be that George BEST remains something of a mystery.   My research faithfully followed his life from birth to the moment he left Tasmania aboard the Shamrock in 1852.   Then the famous "brick wall" appeared and the idea he may have left Victoria for NZ on the Bruce was simply kite flying.   Ages were so poorly documented in the 19th century the 3 year age difference was more than acceptable.

I think he may rest comfortably in my pending tray for the time being 8)

With Saturday just a mere 3 days away my mind is very much concentrated on Eden Park and the hope Mr. Gatland succeeds!!!
