Marriage query and curious entry on cheshire bmd
« on: Tuesday 04 July 17 22:21 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a Jesse Grindey marrying Muriel Davenport in 1923 Macclesfield. Their son was born in 1924 so everything going good so far.  Muriel remarries in 1940 Macclesfield to Albert Tinsley and on the entry on Cheshire bmd it also states that Jesse Grindey married Muriel Davenport 1930.  So now I am looking at this entry a bit bemused.  I couldn't find any death record for Jesse and I am now wondering if maybe they divorced and that Jesse is still alive when Muriel remarries?? and as a divorcee had to declare her previous marriage. What do you think??
I was hoping for a death record of Jesse to help connect him to my Jesse Grindey born 1896 in Staffordshire and then I met this confusion. I have been unable to find a death record prior to Muriels second marriage but I have a couple of possibilities  after the marriage. I hope some one with more knowledge than me can help. Thanks
Anjo

I'm not seeing a divorce?
See: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/divorces/

It could be that they didn't divorce; and simply married again without disclosing that information?

Cheshire BMD does not pick up the 1923 entry.

Other transcription providers do not pick up the 1930 entry.

Maybe you should ask Cheshire BMD to investigate the 1930 marriage.

Jesse Grindey born 13 Jan 1896 died in 1973.

Have you found them on the 1939 register?

The National Archives decree absolute search only goes upto 1937.

To find a divorce after 1937 will cost £65 and needs an application to HMCTS

FreeBMD has an entry for an Eileen Tinsley born in 1934 in Macclesfield, mmn Davenport.

And the 1940 marriage is indexed with Muriel as both Grindey and Davenport, which I think usually indicates a divorce

You could find the 1939 Register interesting ...   ;D

Thanks for all the info folks I much appreciate it.
Usually on an index when the spouse has two names mentioned it can mean the husband is deceased but as the actual marriage of her first spouse is mentioned (even though date is wrong) it led me to wonder if they were in fact divorced or maybe he had deserted her.
I looked on the 1939 index and Muriel is actually living with Albert Tinsley and one other but she is calling herself Tinsley (Tensley) which looks like they were living together prior to marriage.
I will keep digging and see if there is anything else that might help.
Thanks for the interest and suggestions

You say you have found Muriel in 1939.Have you found Jesse?

This marriage seems to be relevant.

Marriages Mar 1935

Briddon    Jessie    Grindey    Bakewell    7b   1301
Grindey    Jesse    Briddon    Bakewell    7b   1301

According to BMD they have 3 daughters after marriage, in 1936, 39 and 41.

Yep that does add to the list of certs I need to see. I have other Jesse Grindeys in my tree and they all come from around the staffs/derby boarder towns. So it could be him or another branch. Thanks for trying.

In 1939 Jesse Grindey is listed along with a brother Isaac ( mistranscribed as Jessie on FindMyPast index).

Jesse Grindey who died in 1973 was born 13 January 1896.  This matches the birthdate of the Jesse Grindey who appears in 1939 with wife Jessie, and a child with the middle name Briddon, so there can't much doubt that he is the man who married Jessie Briddon in 1935.

The Jesse Grindey who married Muriel Davenport was the son of William Grindey. He was aged 29 ( you can see the details on https://familysearch.org/search/  ).
This is probably the Jesse Grindey who was born in Leek district in 1893.

Jesse Grindey born in 1896 had a mother whose maiden name was Turner.
An Isaac Grindey married Mary Ann Turner in Leek district in 1880 (and note that in 1939 Jesse has a brother with him named Isaac).

Jesse Grindey, husband of Muriel seems to have absconded to Australia, where he died in 1940.
Australia death record shows him as the child of William and Anna née Cantwell.  The GRO birth index shows Jesse Grindey b1893 with mother's maiden name Cantrell
The Australia Cemetery inscriptions database (which you can find on familysearch) shows that he was aged 47.

Perhaps, not knowing what had become of him, Muriel divorced him for desertion.
