William Wheatley - The Grange
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 03:17 BST (UK) »
Hi there I was hoping to find out a bit more information about my great great uncle William
William Henry Wheatley

When he died (june 1900) he owned  The Grange, Loughton or Essex

He bequeathed it to his sister Sarah Wheatley
I was just wondering  Did she sell it? how would I find a record of that?
also I was just wondering if I could find out where he was buried. are there any photos of him ?
thank you

Barham/Burram, Brimson, Parkin, Thomas, Underwood, Waldock, Ward, Wheatley,
I am currently researching these names, if you have any information or think you may be linked, please email me I would love to hear from you!

Chelmsford Chronicle, 8 Feb 1901
" ... Mr Lester, of The Grange, Loughton ..."

1901 Census (taken 31 March 1901)
Henry E Lester, age 66, retired ship builder - address Upper Park**, Village, Loughton

** an address on one of the associated posts reads "The Grange, Upper Park, Loughton

Also intrigued by an advert in the Herts Advertiser, 7 Mar 1903
"COOK GENERAL; good plain, wanted; two in family; housemaid kept; no washing - Write particulars, Miss Wheatley, Wood Grange, Loughton"

Have you obtained Williams will - effects £2,776 10s 8d?

miss wheatley would of been Sarah his sister.  I wonder who lester is

no I don't think anyone has collected the money.. to be honest I am not sure. was that money what he had left after he had passed away or was that money left to his brother James?

Henry E Lester may be the buyer of the Grange from your great uncle. William Henry Wheatley died June 1900 - by Feb 1901 Henry E Lester was occupying the Grange.

Are you sure William Henry Wheatley bought "The Grange" or a property that included the word "Grange" - eg "Wood Grange? No guarantee "Miss Wheatley" at Wood Grange is William's sister - might just be coincidence?

Find a will   https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

This site explains how to obtain William's will. Then click on "Start now >", select "Wills and Probate 1858-1996" enter Surname and year of death for basic details of the will.

You could also check for Sarah Agnes' will?

A Henry Andrews, Australian merchant is in "The Grange, Upper Park" on the 1891 Census. He is still there in 1897 according to this death notice in The Times, 20 May -

"DEATHS
Andrews - On the 19th inst, Anne Whiting, daughter of Henry and Mary Whiting Andrews, The Grange, Loughton, Essex"

So, William Henry's possible occupancy sometime between May 1897 and Feb 1900.
