James Milne missing from 1851 census
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 05:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Looking for James Milne born 1802 and his wife Elizabeth Murray born 1807 in the 1851 census.

James and Elizabeth show in 1841 at Nether Mains, St Madoes with their only two children John born 1830 and Mary born 1832.

Then they seem to go missing during 1851 census and pop up again in 1861 in Jamesfield, Abernethy, Perthshire. Transcribed as Miln.

Would love to find that missing 1851 census if anyone has ideas please.

And far too many to add

Thank you, so under Mill not Milne?  No wonder it was a chore finding them.

Was Gaelic their native tongue?  If so the Registrar may have anglicized their Gaelic 'Miln' to 'Mill', which is the equivalent.

Just a thought. Throth

P.S. Jamesfield is situated where the river Earn comes into the River Tay.  St Madoe's is just on the other side of the river Tay.

I really wouldn't know what they spoke way back then.  So I wouldn't be surprised if they spoke Gaelic.
It was known a relation was drowned during the Tay Bridge Accident, so that all ties in with location.

Now this is where we get confused.  The family bible made reference to a relation being killed at Tay, but didn't say who. Great help weren't they?

After researching and looking deeper, I found one Elizabeth Milne age 21 (Dress Maker), weather she is related to James or not, yet to find out. Her father was recorded as John, mother Joan Milne nee Robertson.

Then James' son John Milne he married Joanna Robertson, these may be her brothers William and Alexander Robertson recorded at Tay also

So there might be more than one relation involved.
