Thanks,Rosie. I can see a marriage in Glasgow 15 Oct 1798 of a Robert Fisher and Janet Aitken. Jean would appear to be the youngest of several children.

I think you are correct about Sophia, Rosie. A public tree has a transcript of her death cert (died 21 Feb 1886 Parents Robert Fisher Deceased Blacksmith Jessie Fisher ms Aitken).

Noting the address of Robert Fisher in the 1841 census as Fredk Lane I wonder if he too left a will date 7 June 1848 "Robert Fisher, blacksmith, sometime residing in Frederick Lane of Glasgow, therafter in Holmstead Street,Glasgow". There are two documents, an inventory and a Trust Disposition and Deed of Settlement.

is there a way I can get the names without having to join up to yet another site???

Yes. Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, register and invest in a few credits. Use some of these to view that 1874 marriage certificate, and it will tell you the full names of both sets of parents.

You cannot 'join' Scotland's People, and there is no subscription. It is all pay-per-view, and it is the only place where you can get original Scottish birth, marriage and death certificates, census records and wills.

See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
