Date please for this photo STANFIELD
« on: Wednesday 05 July 17 13:15 BST (UK) »
I have found this photo on the internet while trawling for members of my long gone family.

Please could you give me a date as there were several men of the same name in the Tasmanian family, and I want to be sure which generation this one belongs to.
I hope he could be the one who died in 1856.  Is that possible or not?

I am thinking his hairdo and his clothes might put him about early 1850s - from the very small photos of men for that period in the reference book.

Typically 1850's-60's, however if this was 1850's this would have to be an Ambrotype which appear reversed. You can usually tell this on men because their waistcoats appear fastened the wrong way. As you can see in this it's correct so on that basis 1860's.
What we don't know if this has been reversed at some time prior to going to print.

If it is the man it is purported to be, then he would be in his early 60s - that seems a bit of a push to me.   :-\   born 1790 and died 1856.   :-\

The other contender is Daniel Stanfield born 1829 died 1902 . . .  but that would make him only early 30s, and that doesn't look right either.   :-\

Wiggy could it be that his hair loss makes him appear older ?
Had a look with a magnifying glass  ;D He appears to have quite a lot of grey in his hair and beard.

I had a look on Ancestry to see if anyone had used this photo and to see to whom they have attached it . . . . .  and they seem to think the one who died in 1856.

I don't know where they found the photo . . . .. .  if it is from a recorded family album, then they will be right, but if like me they found it on the Internet, then . . . . .    :-\  :-\ :-\
I hope Jim is correct and that this photo has been reversed from an Ambrotype.

I think it's hard to tell his age because you can't see his skin texture/wrinkles. He could be anywhere between 35 and 65. I did a double-take when I first saw the picture. He's a dead ringer for a past mayor of the town where I live. He had the same hairline from his 40s to his 70s. It would be good to see the original photo. Perhaps the person who first uploaded it to Ancestry has it or knows where it comes from - if the original uploader is still out there.

Anyway, here's a couple of cleaned up Dans.

Cheers, Peter.
