Why can't i find this man on any census?
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 08:27 BST (UK) »
I have Thomas Holtby, Born 1826 (Not sure of the location yet, but presumably Lincolnshire at this stage)

He married a Elizabeth Bescoby/Boscoby (b1831) in 1849 in Gasberton, Lincolnshire

Elizabeth's Baptism
Elizabeth Bescoby Gender Female Christening Date 12 Mar 1832 Christening Date (Original) 12 MAR 1832 Christening Place SPALDING,LINCOLN,ENGLAND Father's Name Thomas Bescoby Mother's Name Hannah

He passed away in 1861 and was buried in Gasberton. His wife Elizabeth passed away and was buried in 1868.

My ultimate aim is to find the name of his mother, i know his father is called William from the marriage register. To do that i would like to either find him on the 1841 census with his family aged 15 or so, or at least find his place of birth on the 1851 census so i can try and find a baptism record for him.

There's a possible entry in the 1861 census because he wasn't buried until the September. Elilzabeth should still be on the 1861 census though. I just can't find the family anywhere!]

Many thanks for any help!

Try searching for Elizabeth just on forename & YoB +/- 2 years in Gasberton - probably the surname is mistranscribed ..... if that finds them, use his forenam & PoB in earlier census searching ...

There are deaths for Rosina and Selina 1860 and 1859.
There is a death for John Stokes in 1854 which has age as 18 yrs- possibly mis transcribed.

There is a Thomas HELSBY born Quadring Lincs age 25 in Spalding work house according to familysearch. Might be worth checking the image to see if could be HOLTBY.
