New Zealand Death Certificates
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 12:18 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have found a death registration which (an outside chance) might be the chap I am looking for. I have mentioned him on a thread some time ago http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=318693.0

The registration I've found is for a Ronald Irwin who died in 1993 at 89 making his birth 1904. He was actually born 11th December 1903 so the date is a little out. Also my late father thought that he had died in the 1950s but he wasn't sure. All in all it is a bit of a gamble.

So before I purchase the death certificate, what information am I likely to find on it?
Also can you know before purchasing in which area the death was registered?
Is there any way of viewing a death certificate at a records office or similar?
Is it cheaper to buy a death certificate in NZ rather than from the UK?

I hope someone might be able to answer these questions so as I can decide whether or not to purchase the certificate. I have a long list of wished for certificates and would be loath to spend money on one which wasn't mine when I could have solved a question by buying another - if you see what I mean.  :)

Oh thank-you Mk2_Zephyr,

A lot more information that we get in the UK. Very tempting, only I wish I could be sure it is him, or at least slightly more sure!

It is cheaper to buy the "printout"
A scanned image of the original record, however if a record has been updated or corrected it will be typed, as a correction cannot be made to a scanned image.
All records 1998 onwards will be typed as there is no scanned image.
Non-emailed printouts are produced on plain white paper.

If he had no relations living in NZ the information on the death registration may not be very accurate as it will only be as good as the informant.

Cheers Janette

Just noting that it is no longer "cheaper to buy the printout" [NZ BDM have had a recent price increase for their "products" ].  New cost for "printout" = $NZ 25-00 :

Always a good idea though to request a "printout" which is copy of the image and often contains more information ( - rather than a certificate which contains info transcribed from the registry entry.)

Hello Brie

Since your earlier thread, many more records have become available online.

I've already had a brief look for items which might connect to the Ronald IRWIN you seek, without much luck so far ... but there are a few curious bits and pieces which require further investigation.
I'll get back to you when I've sorted these out.

A printout is still a lot cheaper than the certificate.
From the BDM website

Printout - post 1874    25.00    A copy of the information from the registration, and usually used for research purposes. It is either handwritten or typed
Printout - pre 1875    25.00    A copy of the information from the registration, and usually used for research purposes. It is either handwritten or typed
Standard Certificate    33.00    Legal official document

Cheers Janette
