The Mysterious George Selby Vail.
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 12:33 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

According to the 1861 census George Selby Vaile was in St. Margaret's Westminster on the night of the census. Described as a journeyman Pork Butcher and gave his place of birth as Middlesex, Whitechapel. He as 35 putting his birth in 1826.

George Salvy Vail married Maria Emma Anderson on 23rd March 1848. His father was John Vail a Cheesmonger.

On the 1841 census he was living in Charles Place, Mile End Old Town.

Can anyone help on George's birth/baptism/christening?

I have checked familysearch for George but none make sense.

Only one that seem remotely possible is https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW6W-82G?print=true but its teh location that seems strange.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

The family search one you have found is non conformist (Dissenters) - it mentions with parents William  John & Mary
William 30 May 1822 (birth)
Edward 7 Sept 1823 (birth)
George 1 May 1825 (birth)
Place of birth High Street, Whitechapel
Abode London, Middlesex

ADDED - that ties in nicely with the family in 1841 Charles Place  ;D
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I wonder if Selby was Marys maiden name.

There is a marriage between a John Vaile & Mary Stewart - both widowed 22 Oct 1815 - St Ann Limehouse

Hi Rosie,

Thanks.

So it looks like the listed George Vail is the one I've been looking for.

Who is William and why did you strike him out?

Does it give John's occupation at all ?
How do I access the info you have obtained ?
Can I ask a daft question .... what is a Dissenters (catholic?)

EDIT:
Interesting info on the marriage (just seen it). Where on earth were they married ?

Sorry, I put William by mistake - crossed him out rather than completely removing him in case others were about to correct me.

Thanks Rosie,

I suspect you have a subscription for Findmypast and/or Ancestry.

Well I think you have found my mysterious George.

John Dryland(?) of Chatham ...

I'll have to dig into John Vaile (Widower) and Mary Stewart (Widow) next.
Thanks :)
