Gilchrist and Cultra family Country Down
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 15:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for information about my ancestor Margaret Gilchrist b. 1860 County Down, daughter of James.

Married Robert Robinson 1879, Portadown County Armagh and have all information about their children.

Father James Gilchrist, mother possibly Catherine Ann Cultra

Was hoping for any confirmation that Margaret's mother is Catherine Cultra (father William Cultra) , and if so any information about the family. Know very little about the name or if there are other spellings such as CLUTRA/CULTRAGH/COULTER

Also if our James Gilchrist's father is Hugh Gilchrist, any further information.

Appreciate the difficulty so far back, but very grateful for any information. MANY THANKS

Since Margaret was born before the start of civil registration there will be no birth certificate so you need to see if church records survive showing baptisms, etc.

Marriage (1846) so likely quite a few children born 1846-1863-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGN9-TQT

Other children of James Gilchrist & Catherine-
daughter (1863) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F52J-PHM (mother Coulter)
son (1864) https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG1K-MFC (transcribed as Coutter)

Added- contrary to what was posted on earlier topic you won't have gotten birth certificates for Margaret or her husband.

Thank you very much! So it's safe to assume that Margaret's mother is Catherine Cultra?

Only if you are absolutely sure that you have the correct James Gilchrist as her father and don't find a baptism with conflicting details.

Hi there. I think I can confirm that Catherine Ann Cultra (of Ballyorgan) is your ancestor. I too am a descendent of the Gilchrists of Ardglass, but from a slightly different branch of the family, although it's likely that we are all descendents from the original James Gillchriest (born in 1636) who is buried in Ardglass Cemetery. He was a land agent for the Earls of Kildare! James and Catherine are buried close by him.

You are so lucky! There is a huge amount of information on your branch of the Gilchrist family in the Down County Museum, including letters exchanged between James and Catherine Gilchrist, and their son James who moved to New Zealand. A daughter Maggie, who settled in Ardmore, is referenced in those letters, and a Mr. and Mrs. Robinson are mentioned. There is also at least one letter from Maggie herself to her brother James and she refers to her husband Robert, and two young sons, John and James! It has to be your Margaret Gilchrist.  :)

James Gilchrist was indeed the son of Hugh Gilchrist and Anne Stockdale. Hugh's parents were Eugene Gillchriest and Margaret Smyth. They are all buried in the little graveyard beside Dunsford Church of Ireland, near Ardglass. The Museum has the will of Anne Gilchrist (Stockdale) on display. It also has a copy in storage of the will of Eugene Gillchriest, who was born around 1730! I took photos of some of the letters etc. when I paid a visit to the museum. I can email some of them to you if you want - they aren't great quality? Someone called Ian Gilchrist in England has done a lot of work on your branch of the family.

Hope this helps!
