Pallion football clubs
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone tell me if George Holborn (also known as Holburn) was a "professional footballer"!!!   He was born late 1800's.  He lived in Pallion and I have found local clubs in newspapers, i.e. Pallion Alma, Pallion Swifts, Pallion United - which do mention a "Holborn", but I have no idea if it is him.

Can anyone throw some light on this.

Thanks. Mo

Nothing found on the English National Football Archive?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks KGarrad for looking that up.

It was a family story that he was a "professional", but it seemed unlikely.  It was probably just a small  local team he played for.

Thanks again.

His local professional club would have been Sunderland.

But maybe he played top-level amateur?
Durham City, Spennymoor United, West Auckland (first ever World Cup winners! ;D), Crook Town, and so forth.

Hi everyone.

Just had a revelation from a family member that he actually played for Abertillary Football Club!!!! ::)  Why or how, when he had always lived in Pallion is a complete mystery. ???

I will now refer my post to the Welsh forum.  ;D

Thanks again for all your help.

Some info here:

Didn't play at a very high level, though.
