Question about RootsMagic
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 16:31 BST (UK) »
Please can someone tell me how to do a particular thing in RootsMagic.  I have looked in Help and I also have the RootsMagic handbook but I cannot find the answer!

I have somehow (in several cases) ended up entering a person's spouse twice - the same spouse, not two different spouses.  How do I get rid of the second unnecessary entry without deleting a lot of information?  I have wondered about this for ages and just in desperation tried to delete one of the rogue entries, and I've lost all the data about the person and all his ancestors!!

There must be a simple way to do this - please!

What you need is the Merge facility. ;D

Tools
Merge
Manual Merge

Then select the 2 people.

Thank you, but I must be doing something wrong because I tried that and it just said I could not merge them because it was the same person.

??? :(

In that case, double click on the husband to get to the Edit screen.
Can you highlight one of spouse occurrences?
And then try Delete Fact?

Thank you - I will try later when I have a spare few minutes for FH research.  You know how it sometimes is!

Hi, I'm not sure this will work as it's a while since I had this same problem but if you highlight the name of one of the duplicate entries and change his first name to something you don't have on your database already, the click on "edit" then scroll down to "delete" where you get the option to remove the person. I hope this helps.

If you 'Unlink' the person (right-click and select unlink) rather than 'Delete' them, you will not lose any data. It is a simple matter to then re-connect as required.

Dear KGarrad, Heymin and Mike175

Thank you all very much for helping me out.  Mike's 'unlink' system works - thanks so much!

I don't think it's very clear that that is the answer to this problem, which I cannot be alone in encountering.  It would be good if the person who developed RootsMagic could include a clear explanation of how to do this in the instructions.

But perhaps I am just not very logically-minded.

Thanks again to you all.  I'll now go and get rid of all the duplicate spouses I've created.

Glad that worked  :)

There is almost nothing you can't do with RootsMagic, but having so many features means there is a lot to learn. I've been using it for years and still keep finding things I didn't know about.
