Cocking family in Exeter - 1820s
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 17:22 BST (UK) »
The Australian marriage certificate of Robert Cocking to Isabella Murray on 18 April 1854 lists his birth place as Exeter with an age of 32.

He was therefore born c1821/2 and I know his father was Richard Percy Cocking.

Richard Percy Cocking was in business with his father Robert Cocking senior in London in 1826 as they were then declared bankrupt.

What I would like to try and find out - and am hoping someone could help me with - is firstly finding Robert's c1821/2 baptism in Exeter (and any other possible children).

I would secondly like to see if the Cocking family are in any trade directories in Exeter at the time in case the Cockings had a business there.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Was the Australian marriage a second marriage for Robert?

Just that there is a marriage 7 Nov 1844, Lambeth, for a Robert Cocking, bachelor, of New Curt, Butcher, father Richard Cocking deceased , to MAry Ann Hobson.

Or maybe there are just two Robert Cocking with father called Richard around.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Mary Ann Elizabeth Cocking born March Q 1850 (mmm Hobson) died Mar Q 1854. Both Lambeth. No obvious record of death of mother, and hardly time for Robert to get  Australia by April  1854 so almost certainly not same person (unless he was being naughty!)

Hello
There is a marriage for Richard Percy cocking at ST Lukes Chelsea 15.6.1816 to  Caroline Sophia Tornquist by banns bach and spinster otp
wit C Goodyear and Jno Hannam

There's a possible son Henry Percy William Cocking born 7.3.1816 bapt 14.10.1816 at St James Piccadilly. His parents are from St James St and his father is described as a Gentleman.
The boy was buried at St Mary Lambeth age 24 5th April 1840 of Savlle Place.

This may be the widow in 1851 3 Johnana St  Lambeth
Caroline Cocking widow 60 marine ? dealer Swedan
Harriet Hobson daughter married 25 Chelsea
Robert Hobson son  in law 27 Beal porter NK
Robert 4 grandson Lambeth
Harriet 2 granddaughter   Lambeth

And it looks like Caroline cocking death Dec 1855 age 66 1D 299 may be her.

Harriet was a unmarried Cocking in 1841 age 15 Lower Marsh Waterloo road liking with the Simpsons -HV 25,Elizabeth 23,Richard 6mths
She had married at Lambeth 1 Mar 1848
Robert Hobson coach painter 25 Regent St Benjamin labourer
Harriet same father Richard dec stationer

wit Edward Rollins and Harriet Westbrook.

There's a Alice Cocking baptised at St Mary Lambeth 4 July 1833 of Granby Buildings stationer but no sign of Robert or Harriet.( It looks like Alice was buried the 14th of July 1833).

There is also a burial for a Richard Cocking 31.10.1842 George St age 49 at St Luke Chelsea which would fit Richard Percy Cocking.

As for that other possible marriage for Robert there is a Caroline Ann baptised at 1.3.1846 at Lambeth and her parents are of Joanna St butcher Robert and Mary .
This is them 1851 Lambeth
Robert 31 ironmonger Pimlico
Mary 31 Hampshire
Caroline Ann 5 Lambeth
Mary A E 1 1/2
Charles B P 2mths   (died Dec 1865 Wandsworth)

(There was a Richard Percy Dec 1847,Benjamin John Mar 1853 Lambeth).
By 1861 Caroline is a pupil at the Paddington home 18 Conduit St .So something has happened to the family to split them up.

There is a possibility that this them 1871 114 Eagle St Southwark
Mary Ann Lorking widow 41 Stockbridge Hampshire
Benjamin 18 Lambeth
William 12 Chelsea (possible birth William Broadbent Cocking June 1859).
Albert L/Sye 7 boarder Chelsea.

There's also a Havelock Dec 1857 Chelsea to 1859,so to me it looks like Robert and Mary split up.He went to Australia  and she stayed in London and had two more children with some one else.

Sorry but I can't see anything in Exeter
