Carnegie from Bushmills also Mcbride and mcnally
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 19:58 BST (UK) »
I am taking a trip to Northern Ireland in a few weeks (last 10 days of July).  My tree on the Carnegie side goes back to Archibald Carnegie 1806 born in Ireland (Scotland Census 1941)... he had a son Daniel in 1833 in Billy, Bushmills, Antrim, Ireland. (also had a son John in 1831 and daughter Mary Jane in 1837  They moved to Scotland in 1840.

Archibald married Margaret Moffet  (or Mahon or mcMahon) b 1802.

Daniel Married Elisabeth Mcbride b 1837 who is from Armagh, Ireland.  Parents John Mcbride and Rose Ann McNally (born ?)

Anyway... I would love to do some research but have no idea where to start... everything dead ends at Archibald... Any thoughts... or if anyone has any info on the above please let me know.

Also, there was a migration from Scotland to Ireland at some point in the 1700's I think...so not sure if Archibalds folks were from there... but he was born in Ireland.

Unfortunately records can be scarce for early 1800s. Have you looked at the resources on this website?
http://www.billmacafee.com/

If you know what religion the family were you can see if any early church records survive-
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/proni-guide-church-records

Map of Bill Parish might help- https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/billy/

If you suffer from hay fever I suggest you bring your medication as pollen count very high at the moment  :'(

Carnegie have been in Ireland before 1660’s and in the very area you are visiting.
Antrim-Dunluce Lower-Derrykeighan-Ballydivity-2 Qrs of Ballyginity-William-Carginie-Carnegie
from the1660s Ulster Hearth Rolls database see http://www.billmacafee.com
and the downloadable many other databases

if the civil parishes confuse, use this map http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim/maps/civil-parishes-of-county-antrim.php#.WWCI7saZP9M
8   Ballintoy includes Dunseverick and the Giants causeway.
19   Billy includes Bushmills
43   Grange of Drumtullagh includes Armoy
70   Ramoan includes Ballycastle
30   Derrykeighan Includes Dervock, all north of Ballymoney

looks like a shared townland over 2 parishes is your Archibald old enough to be cited legally as the tenant

Griffiths valuation 1860ish from quick index http://www.failteromhat.com/post1845.php
Carnegie   James      Ballylough More      Billy   Antrim
Carnegie   John      Carnkirk         Billy   Antrim
Carnegie   Rose      Curramoney or Billy      Billy   Antrim
Carnegie   William   Main Street,(Clogher North)   Billy   Antrim
Carnegie   Alexander   Aghrunniaght         Armoy   Antrim

The value of GV is it has a detailed website where on the typescript printed pages online you get map references and then the opportunity to an 1860 map with boundaries of each homestead many stay the same form earlier times. Then you go google current, satellite view and streetview

As an exlibrarian in Co Antrim, the debt to Andrew Carnegie for helping to start information centres ie libraries used in my lifetime and earlier will not be forgotten, even if books go out of vogue.
Have a lovely time and hope you want to come again and Good luck on family history and football

PS
from GenesReunited individuals listed include about 51 Carnegie in Ireland but only one in Billy so far  you would need to join! UNLESS YOU ARE JAMES

Enjoy the Milk Cup (or whatever they changed the name to) and watch out for the Lodge Road roadabout in Coleraine (5 roads coming into large roundabout- some have 3 lanes)- I live here and I have to think carefully about which lane I need!

BallyaltikilliganG - Thank you for all of this info... I am hoping I can find some link to my family.  I noticed one of the townland called carnegybugh (or something like that)... did they name townlands after families?   (I couldnt refind this townland so ? : ) )... I do appreciate the help/work you put into your post.

aghadowey - thanks for the info about the Roundabout.  I am pretty worried about just driving on the other side of the road! Roundabouts in a different lane is going to get me...   We are staying in PortStewart... the kids are staying in Coleraine... Should be a fun Tourney... if you get a chance come out and root for Strikers FC 2002's (they play County Antrim on day 3)

Just follow everyone else when driving- but watch out in car parks as one tends to automatically revert to their 'own' side of the road in open spaces  ;)

see topic http://www.belfastforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,6784.15.html

re the townland, yes they can incorporate names, the nearest I could find quickly is
Carnageeragh (Carn na gCaorach) , Kilraghts Civil Parish, Barony of Dunluce Upper, Co. Antrim 205 A, 3 R, 25 P from https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/
Travelling south from Billy civil parish you go through Derrykeighan to Ballymoney and Kilraghts parish is to the east.

there are published books about Co Antrim place names example Place-Names of Northern Ireland, Vol. 7: County Antrim II, Ballycastle and North-East Antrim but I couldn’t find the volume containing NW Antrim

I came across a ref Carnegy Family names on stones in Billy graveyard.see http://www.ulsterancestry.com/ShowFreePage.php?id=295

enjoy your time, have a visit to Bushmills Distillery

Thanks BallyaltikilliganG

That was the townland that I found... What does it translate into? roughly?

I couldnt get into the Ulster site... but thanks for the belfast forum.  I will search through there and also posted this there.

In going through all of the links/extra data people have given...and knowing that most records before 1860 to the early 1800/late 1700s were destroyed... not sure how I can ever link a carnegie I find to Archibald.  With common family names William/Daniel/Archibald/Thomas  and Elizabeth/Margaret... my assumption is his family will have those names as well... so that is what I am focusing on ... I do appreciate all the help...  When I am there should I check out the Proni building?  I may get lost in there and never see much of northern Ireland! ;)
