Brothers missing - in USA?
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 22:08 BST (UK) »
Hi.

I have Joseph Barrow 1838, born Westhoughton and his brother Robert 1840.

Both are in 1851 census living with step-mother Jane Dootson (was Jane Rigby who married Robert Barrow - died 1845).

Neither in subsequent UK censuses. I have found a Joseph in California and a Robert in Cincinatti, Ohio - both in 1870 US census.

Nothing more found.

Any help/suggestions most welcome.

Thank you

Phil

Are you looking at the same Joseph Barrow as me? In the US 1900 US census Joseph and Harriet say they married in 1866. As they are both born England there is this UK marriage on FreeBMD with a Joseph Barrow on the same page as a Harriet Williams but not in Lancashire. Registration district Portsmouth Dec 1/4 1866 vol 2b page 765.
Whether it is your man or another Joseph Barrow?
They are in the 1870 US census in California with son William 3 and daughter Marcetta 1 both born in California so if they are the couple who married in 1866 in Portsmouth they emigrated pretty much straight after their marriage.

Many thanks for this info.

Seems like the wrong one......

Can't think why Joseph would be in Portsmouth at that age. I don't have access to the 1900 census so wasn't aware of this.

Thank you again.

having taken a closer look at this I think your Joseph is still in England in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. In each he is single and boarding. he is a joiner and carpenter.
1861 RG9 piece 3168 folio 60 page 9 with Matthew and Jane Ashburner in Ulverston
1871 RG10 piece 3928 folio 15 page 24 boarding with Michael and Agnes Coffey in Tonge with Haulgh

The trouble is I saw Colton transcribed. I thought I'd seen that Colton was actually a place so accepted it so!!!

Too complacent.

All the censuse say that Joseph Burrows joiner/carpenter is born Colton Lancashire. Is there such a place? I thought it was a mistranscription on one of the earlier censuses but it continues up to the 1901 census.
Our posts crossed. I tried google maps but it doesn't come up with a Colton.

Colton is a village near Ulverston which is now Cumbria.

Perhaps this is a different family of Barrows.
