Thank you for the link re US census.

So I wasn't wrong then re Colton. More disappearing acts.

Joseph in the censuses from Colton is not the one from Westhoughton. Is that agreed?

Hi.

I have Joseph Barrow 1838, born Westhoughton and his brother Robert 1840.

Both are in 1851 census living with step-mother Jane Dootson (was Jane Rigby who married Robert Barrow - died 1845).

Phil

Hi Phil,
Just a query. Is Jane the mother and they are step sons of Mr Dootson?

Heywood

Hi
I have been searching for Robert born c1840 and can't find anything on him after the 1851 census
Robert and Jane had a daughter baptised 1839 but birth date recorded as 14 April 1830. She married an Edward Carter March 1/4 1849 I think. In the 1851 census they are with their daughter Alice and a Samuel Barrow age 7 described as 'brother.' His birth is on the GRO index march 1/4 1844 mother's maiden name Rigley.
I have tried searching for the other children's birth registrations  - those born from Sept 1/4 1838 with mother's maiden name Rigby/Rigley and am not being very succesful

Hi heywood, the census has the Barrow children as step children of the head of household Peter Dootson
Oh heck so there is a Colton - back to the drawing board.

Yes. Jane remarried after Father's death in 1845. She was Jane Rigby.

I was just querying that you had written that they were living with their 'step mother' when it should read 'their mother and step father'.

Here's a Joseph Burrow in Colton in 1841
HO107 Piece 528 Book 9 Folio 13 Page 19
 Colton, Lancashire
Myles Burrow 20 Cooper
Catharine Burrow 25
Joseph Burrow 4
Jane Burrow 3 months

I searched using B*r*w, no first name, no date of birth. He's still with his parents in 1851 as Burrow

Heywood - thank you again. Another successful find. Thank you for all your help everyone. I thought I was onto something grand and yet they both died young, close to home...
