Ella Read, Scarborough
« on: Thursday 06 July 17 22:14 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to ID the woman in these two pictures please, assuming that you agree that it's the same person? One photo is marked Ella Read, and both were taken in Scarborough.

I have several questions I suppose... when do you think she was born, based on her age, dating the photos etc? I have found a Mary Ella Read (b. 10 Mar 1878, d. 24 Feb 1974), born in Scarborough. Might it be her? As context to the picture, it is from a family album belonging to William Augustus Humfrey (1869-1944).

I've also what I think is a later picture of their family house, but where I don't know!. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

The first thing to say is can we see the backs ?
They look the same lady to me.
The 1st. she looks late teens - early 20's & a little older in the 2nd. around 25 which fits the dates as the 1st. photo is the earliest, however because there is little to see it's difficult to say exactly when it was taken. The sleeve style could be a late style kick-up (1892-4) or an early gigot (1893-96).
The 2nd. is typical mid - late 1890's, however (there's always an however) the style briefly re-appeared in the mid Edwardian Era.
I have to say when I saw the 2nd. she looks a typical school teacher which is what she was.

Not sure it is the same person.  Very different hair, and I don't think the first person has had her hair crimped.  It looks natural to me.     :-\  :-\

-    could be related.    :)

Edit . .    On my own then? :)

Those wonderful belt buckles used to be part of nurses uniforms didn't they?   In UK, not here in Aus!   ;)

With regard to picture 3 this was taken with a Kodak so a snapshot by one of the Reads probably. It could be anytime from just before WW1 & into the 20's.
The house where they were living in 1911 is still there & it's not this one.

The Mary Ella you mentioned was living in Derby in 1911 as a Headmistress but we can't be sure it's the lady in your photos...Ella could be short for another name...Isabella along with others. We can't be sure that she was born in Scarborough as photographers often travelled.

Looking at the Reads they had 3 daughters Mary Ella, Margaret & Ann Elizabeth.
When their mother died in 1934 she was living at Greenways Scalby Yorks.
Maybe pic. 3 was taken there.

Hi Simsam.

I hope you don't mind, I attempted a little clean on the first photo.
After looking at her face for so long, I think it is the same person as in the second photo.
