Where to find Belgian B, M & D's??
« on: Friday 07 July 17 00:55 BST (UK) »
I haven't searched for anyone in Belgium before & so don't really know what sites are available.   Is anyone able to direct me to some please?    I'm looking for someone named Meinertzhagen who was born in Antwerp in 1892.    He married my gt grandmother's sister in Wales in 1919 but he didn't appear to die in the UK, she did & their son did but I'm assuming he went back to Antwerp after she died in 1955 as I can't find a death for him.
Can anyone help please?   Thanks so much, Amberly.

Maybe start here?

But, I think thee will be limits on what you can see?
Births less than 100 years ago aren't available, I think?

Thanks so much for replying & sending the website.

I've put the name Meinertzhagen & Antwerp in there but no luck.   I also tried with a specific name & date but still no luck, but thanks anyway.

Not everything is fully name indexed.

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/2138481
 - Antwerp records are also on familysearch, I find them easier to sort through here than on the Belgian archives site, they are, again, not fully name indexed you must look at the images directly using the "Browse through..." link at the bottom. There are ten-year indexes (Tienjarige tafels ) as well as bmds.

One possible (going by the "Joseph Meinertshagen" marriage in 1919):
Josephus Maria Meinertzhagen 1892, no 4767
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ke7/

My Dutch is not very good but he was the son of Aloysius Meinertzhagen, a clerk, and Joanna Catharina Delsaux. Unfortunately a check of the death registers show that this boy died in 1894.

I do not see another possible, at least not in 1892 or near years in Antwerp proper. He may have been born in a town near to Antwerp. From the marriage certificate in Wales, do you have his father's name and occupation?

Thank you jorose.  I'm sorry I've been tardy in replying but I've been away for a few days.   I've looked at all you've sent me but cannot find the correct family.
I have the marr cert & it states that his father's name was also Joseph & he was a diamond merchant but I believe he was a clerk in a diamond office??!!   When my Joseph married in 1919 he gave his Welsh address but also said formerly of 39. Garnot Place, Borgerhout, Antwerp.   It looks like Garnot & I believe Borgerhout is a suburb of Antwerp.
Thanks for your help but Family Search doesn't seem to have the family I'm looking for.   It's the death of Joseph who married in 1919 that I'm looking for as I cannot find him dying in the UK & he was still alive in 1955 when his wife died in Wales.

Borgerhout records appear to be held separately from Antwerp (not uncommon for areas which are now suburbs of large cities). They can still be found within the "Antwerp" collection.

There are a number of Meinertzhagen births listed in the ten-year indexes, including a Joseph in 1892 (No 490).

Direct link to birth - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kf9/  - bottom left

Josephus Meinertzhagen - I think 8th June? - son of Josephus Meinertzhagen, diamond merchant, and Maria Josepha Dorothea Hortensia Huyts (or Nuyts?)

Also a younger sister in 1893
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kfa/
Maria Germania Meinertzhagen

Younger brother 1896
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kfb/
Marcellus Antonius Meinertzhagen

Unfortunately there is no indication of any marginal notes or anything to reference later records, but perhaps more investigation of his parents and siblings will lead you to information about his later years.

Thanks very much once again jorose.
I knew he had a brother named Marcel but here I found his full name & a sister, so that was great.
I shall investigate further now I know the family is on there.
I shall try to find someone to translate it all for me but the writing doesn't help because it is so difficult to read.
Anyway thanks again, much appreciated.
Amberly.
