William Miller and Mary Essex of Mersham
« on: Friday 07 July 17 02:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've just discovered that my ancestors William Miller and Mary Essex were married by licence in Kent in 1670.

They married in Mersham and Cowper's published volume of marriage licences for the period gives the following details :

"William Miller, of Mersham, husb, ba, 25,  whose mother consents, and Mary Essex, s p, v, d of Hannah Essex, w, who also consents."

The licence is dated 8 Nov 1670 which would make William born c1645 if he was 25. However the only William I've found was christened in Wye in 1635 which would make him 35 not 25.

Is anyone aware of a William Miller christened in Mersham or nearby in the mid 1640s who might fit? Alternatively does anyone think the age on the transcript could be wrong?

Lastly I'd be interested if anyone has info on Mary Essex or her mother Hannah.

Thx

Matt

I am wondering why his mother's consent would have been necessary if he was 25.

That's a very good question and something I'm wondering about myself. If anyone has any suggestions it would be great to hear them.

Perhaps I need to consult the original marriage licence? It looks like I'll need to go to Canterbury for that.

There is a William Miller baptised at Waltham as,

1645 Dec 28 son of William & Mary

May be worth considering.

Hi Tony

Thanks for that.

How far is Waltham from Mersham? I haven't come across this one myself.

I'll look into it to see if I can find any more details on this William and his family.

Thank again

Hi Matt,

As the crow flies the villages are about 6 miles or so apart.

Hi Tony,

Just found it on the map myself. I'm currently trying to see if I can find any more children there, or possibly William and Mary's marriage. I haven't found anything on Findmypast or Familysearch though yet.
