I think Myrtle HARTNETT married Ethelbert LUGTON in 1921, and died 7 Dec 1973. Her death notice says aged 83, so born c1890.

That's a good find muss, if Harcourt did the Qualifying Certificate exam in 1919, then he was probably born c1906, as it occurred at the end of Primary School.

Had also been about to add the 1925 NSW Police Gazette entry as found by Muss.   

Just to expand on it though ... and to emphasise that the name was shown as
Leonard Harnett (rather than Hartnett) ...  and with HARCOURT as the surname, the listing also included a regimental number > No. 598. 
[Source:  New South Wales Police Gazette - 29 July 1925 :  Date of desertion given as 13th instant (i.e.  13 July 1925). ]

In a Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, dated No. 97, of 24 June 1948, this entry :
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal :  Temporary Quartermasters and Honorary Lieutenants :
NP 598 (NX70192) (Major) Harcourt Leonard HARTNETT.

As can be seen, both have the same regt. number.   

I suppose you have to ask whether HLH originally enlisted as "Leonard Harnett HARCOURT" ... or was there an error in the names published in the NSW Police Gazette

Sandi, it occurs to me that this is on the New Zealand board, it might be worthwhile posting on the Australia board with a link to this thread as sometimes people there have other resources which may be able to help find Harcourt's birth. 

I have had a bit of a look at William Edward HARTNETT's family, hoping to find any clues. Just thought I'd share what I have just in case you don't know already. William Edward's father, also Wiliam, was married to Ellen HOWES, they had at least 9 children: Agnes (1858), William Edward (1859), James Alfred (1862), John Henry (1864), George Augustus (1866), Helena Maud (1868), Florence Matilda (1869), Mary Ellen (Nellie, 1873), Joseph Francis (1876), Arthur Victor Howes (1882). I think Ellen along with most of the children ended up in Australia sometime before 1891, most in NSW although Arthur died in Melbourne. Ellen died in 1929.

There are connections to Newcastle - the mention on the Police Gazette, and the fact that William Edward married Elizabeth in Newcastle, but still looking for Harcourt's birth ...
