Maddy

I think that William Hartnett might be William Edward Hartnetts father and Ellen his mother?

Just a thought as there is a William Edward in that Cenus family

Yes, I was just reading about Agnes death, various death notices and memorials on Trove, which list her children as May, Myrtle, Amber and "only son" Nelson.

I'm assuming William Edward then married Elizabeth von Benke (formerly Fitzhenry?) in 1913.

Still trying to work out where Harcourt came from! What a complicated family, though there seems to be quite a few generations of Army.

I think Harcourt is the son of William Edward Hartnett!  So his mother must be Agnes Williams but still haven't found his birth place and date.

So if Harcourt lied about his age, he said he was born in 1903 to get into the Army. My guess is he was younger than was allowed so said he was older than he really was so he is possibly Elizabeth Fitzhenry's son born after she married William Edward Hartnett which was 1913. Is that possible? It is a 10 yr difference maybe too much, hey??

He is not mentioned in Agnes death notice on Trove hey? You mention that only son was Nelson!  Very compilicated so who's son is he??  If we could only find his birth?

Could he have been a son of one of Agnes daughters and brought up by William and Elizabeth after Agnes died.

If say, one of Agnes daughters gave birth to Harcourt could she have gone out of Nsw and had him in another state?  Maybe there is a baptism some where.

So far as I can see, William Edward HARTNETT (1859-1944) married Agnes WILLIAMS (1862-1907) in 1888 in Paddington, NSW. Agnes dies in 1907, her death notice says she had 4 children, I can't readily see the births of May and Myrtle, but the others are:

39312/1892 Amber R (at Woollahra)
26410/1907 Nelson William Edward (at Mosman)

Presumably the other girls are older than Amber, so yes ... they could be the mother of Harcourt.

William remarries Elizabeth Von BENCKE (nee Fitzhenry) in 1913 in Newcastle, NSW. As far as I can see Elizabeth didn't have any children with her previous husband Gyula von BENKE, they were married in Sydney in 1899 and divorced in 1912.

There is also at least one of William Edward's sisters in NSW: Maud marries Adolphus ISAACS in 1896. It is also possible Harcourt could be the son of one of William's siblings?

Just for fun, Gylva von Benke sounds like an interesting fellow. He remarried in Melbourne.
