What became of the Elphick family?

Edward Elphick [various spellings bap 1734 Willingdon] and Hannah Bovis [bap 1732 Crowhurst] married 03 Jan 1759 at Rye.  Edward & Hannah's son John was born at Rye 1760.  In 1761 the family was removed from Salehurst to Willingdon.  Three children were baptised at Willingdon being Hannah [1762], Thomas [1766] & Anne [1770].

After thus date I lose track of the family although there was a baptism of Mary in 1774 daughter of Edward Elphick and Elizabeth.  I haven't located a marriage.

Any assistance gratefully received.

Not really my area of the country so forgive me for not having much.
There is a burial for Thomas Elphick infant at Willingdon 28.5.1766
Also Edward and Elizabeth have another child Samuel 11.9.1768 so it can't be the same man.(Unless he had two wives on the go).
There is a possible burial for Edward born 1734 1.11.1818 at Chiddingley with a death duty record as well at the National Archives IR27/169.

John Elfick, son of Edward and Hannah, was baptised at Salehurst, Sussex on 6 April 1760.

For some reason Ancestry has the baptism as taking place at Rye, Sussex. I've had experience of this in my own families from Salehurst where baptisms which actually took place in Salehurst are appearing in Ancestry's England and Wales Christening Index and England Select Births and Christenings as happening at Rye. There are no Elphick/Elfick baptisms at Rye in the period 1747 -1773.

Thanks so much for that correction.  I wonder why Anc are using Rye instead of Salehurst as an example?

What records do you have access to that seem to be more accurate in this instance???

Anc's not to blame - the data in this instance comes from the LDS and their British Isles Vital Records Index. It comes up as Rye on FamilySearch too.

Count me in on the Rye/Salehurst  mix-up.  I got so baffled I just about gave up on my Salehurst ancestry.  I wonder if this applies to other East Sussex parishes as well e.g. Ticehurst?

That explains it.  Its good that you have a wealth of experience as that piece of information is invaluable. 

I noticed that in the Removal Order of the Elphick family it was from Salehurst.  I had wondered at the time and assumed the family must have moved around a lot.

The Edward Elphick who was buried at Chiddingly in 1818 was a miller and he passed over the business to his two sons Thomas and Richard in 1812, per an article in the Sussex Advertiser newspaper 26 October 1812. The Death Duties Register shows his executor was Thomas Elphick.

The Edward Elphick who married Hannah Bovis at Rye in 1759 was, per the marriage register transcript, a seaman, and a sojourner itp (a temporary resident in this parish). It appears he is the Edward bap Willingdon 1734 and looks unlikely that he is the miller Edward, who I think came from Arlington/Hellingly.
