Wandsworth. Her middle name was Layton, & I've tried under various combinations of first/middle/last, first/middle, middle/last with no joy. Also tried Nell, Nellie, Helen, Eleanor etc. Have just found her on the 1939 register though, so I need to buy some credit & look at that.
Eastwood - Kent/Sussex; Apted, Phillips- Sussex; Jermy - Norfolk; Grove - Buckinghamshire; Coles - London; Pilgrim, Harvey - Kent/Essex; Gambrell/Gambrill - Kent

Going by the ticket numbers shown in the first column, Ellen was travelling with Edith Taylor, the 39-year-old nursemaid.

The women were in Second Class rather than Third, so seem likely to have had their ticket paid for by an employer. I've paged through the whole list hoping for a similar ticket number for an employer but without success. The arrangements for the servants were probably made after the original booking.

Elizabeth Faulkner, housekeeper and 63, does have a similar ticket number. So does Harry Downing, teacher, 25, but he is heading to Canada.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Is it too simplistic to suggest that you look at the other passengers to see who is travelling to the same destination as Ellen? Might this narrow down a list of possible employers?

Presumably she would be travelling with her employer unless the employer travelled separately and Ellen and the Nursemaid were 'sent ahead' or called for later?  :-\

As Ruskie says, and I had already suggested, were there the same family names on both passenger lists? If there were, that could identify potential employers - or at least narrow down the search!
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

On the 2nd page of the 1931 passenger list, it says Ellen's passage was paid by Mrs. R. B. Moffatt, she was previously in New York and last departed in 1920, and Ellen was going to 660 Park Avenue, New York City.  There is an R. Burham Moffatt on the list of US citizens on the same ship and going to the same address, as shown here - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24NN-X4H

A 1913 passenger list has R. Burnham Moffatt with the first names crossed out and Ellen written in.  This 1930 census has Ellen P. Moffatt at 660 Park Ave. with 3 servants but no Ellen Grove.  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X42L-G73

There you are, that certainly sounds likely! Worth following up, at least...

Interestingly, "R. Burnham Moffat (1861-1916) was a New York City attorney and the author of several genealogical works."  http://archives.nypl.org/mss/18099

This appears to be Ellen Moffat.  https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=152799913  There are a bunch of passport applications and passenger lists for her on familysearch.org, so it looks like she travelled back and forth a lot.
