harold hendry missing grandfather
« on: Saturday 08 July 17 13:45 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather was Harold wallace hendry born in new zealand 1903....  Had two brothers George Forbes hendry and thomas Craig hendry and a sister Margaret Milligan Hendry. Harold's parents were George and Agnes hendry. I have been trying for four years to just find Harold. He at some point moved to Australia because he got married over here in 1930 and had my dad in 1938. Then completely disappeared.  There is no record of him at all for living in australia even though he was here for at least 8 years.. He may have gone back to NZ. I just cant find him.  Any help would be so wonderful.  Thank you for your time.

Welcome to Rootschat

Are we also looking for wife, Martha?

I see that they were residing in QLD.

1930   B9125 Harold Hendry   Ellen Martha McGregor

I assume they were separated, yes?

Death: 1956 B12548 Ellen Martha Hendry James McGregor Kate Sainsbury

NZ birth: 1903/652 Hendry   Harold Wallace Agnes Brown and George

Do you have his mother's death cert? I'm wondering if it may provide information on children, such as living/deceased?

1957/31642 Hendry Agnes Brown 85Y

He is not mentioned in his mother's Will, so perhaps already deceased by then?

Have you seen either of the parents' death certificates to see how their children are recorded?

The online newspapers do not extend that far so you would need to go to the library to look for death notices which might also mention their children.

Hmm his son born in 1938 he disappeared before WW2 began. Have you tried applying to the Ministry of Defense in Australia and or in New Zealand to see if he has a WW2 service number?

He could have gone to war?

Australian WW2 service records are available via the national archives and are all indexed.  The nominal roll is also available online.

This man was in the civil construction corps which is why there is no nominal roll or service record for him.  He was born in Queensland in 1908.

If the child born in 1938 was an only child then you would have to have some doubt that Harold was the father.  Eight years between the marriage and the birth and no deaths of children registered.  Have you seen the birth certificate?  Who registered the birth?  Is there an occupation for Harold?

Harold may have been gone long before 1938 and could have changed his name.  Perhaps a search of deaths under the surnames WALLACE or CRAIG might find something?

Hi,

I'm new to these records, can you tell if the archive entry found by whiteout7,

J1207 HENDRY H Hendry, Harold - allotment ledger cards, Army Personnel World War II

is for the same person as the Harold Kenneth HENDRY b.1908 entry?

J1732 HENDRY H K Hendry, Harold Kenneth - born 1908 - Civil Constructional Corps CQ16430

Regards,
Daisy
