Sinclair Street Garston (name origin?)
« on: Saturday 08 July 17 17:42 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me the origin of the name of Sinclair Street in Garston? It's a small street just off King St.  My Sinclair family nearby in the 1860's, but being a gardener, I doubt they were well known enough to have a street named after them.  However, I did think it was worth checking out.  I have searched the internet for street name origins for Liverpool and Garston, but haven't been able to find anything.

Thanks,
Barbara

I will find out in the pub tomorrow  :) to my knowledge those streets were built  for the workers in the Copper Works - they brought many many Welsh people to Garston because the Welsh knew how to work Copper - maybe a couple of streets were named after the Copper Works bosses - Hughes st as an example -   is Sinclair a Welsh surname ?   - I know quite a few Sinclair family

I don't know if it is Welsh.  We believe it was originally Shingler and misspelled or changed to Sinclair (also Sinkler etc).  His wife was Welsh though. However, he was a gardener, not working in the Copper Works as far as I know. Thanks, and have a pint for me!  ;)

No and no.  My GG Grandmother was a Sinclair.  I live in BC, Canada, where she emigrated to in 1870.  :)

Yeah, that one is very likely my GGGGrandmother. That record is also listed as Mary Louisa Sinclair as well.

With the help of some wonderful people on this forum, I've managed to track down my Sinclair (and various spellings) family with birth/marriage certs and some death records, as well as 1841-1891 census data. Ain't the internet grand?  Her father and family was originally from Prees, Shropshire under the name Shinglar/Shingler/Shinglor.  She and her parents lived in Aigburth/Garston/ and Birkenhead during her time in the Liverpool area.  They also spent at least 4-5 years back in Shropshire during the mid 1850's.

Now I'm just trying to track down the locations where they lived in the mid 1800's so I can see them when I visit in September. :)

Thanks again for your help. :)

Scottish origin
http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Sinclair
the Scottish Sinclair family originate from the Normans who came over Saint Claire - that makes sense -  :)
