Missing groom
« on: Sunday 09 July 17 07:22 BST (UK) »
From FreeBMD:- Marriages Sep 1857. Stoke Damerel, 5b/488. Names listed - Elizabeth Cowling, Mary Ann Beckley and Peter Fox. Is there any way of determining/deducing the missing groom?

There is a marriage of Elizabeth Cowling to William Cumbe on FreeBMD Stoke Damerel Sept Qtr 5b   48.    I wonder if the addition on an extra 8 was a mistake on the other record

The marriage is 22 Sep 1857  Stoke Damerel - William Cumbe age 22 Butcher - Elizabeth Cowling 20 - Fathers William Cumbe - Butcher and John Cowling - Carpenter

Kay

Added - On parish records Peter Fox married Mary Ann Beckley

This methd applies to any mis-match.

Go back to freebmd, do a marriage search, leave the names empty, select Stoke Damerel from the drop down list of reg districts, then select Sept 1857 in both date boxes and run the search.

You need to scroll down the list to look for reg district names or references are intalics which indicate they are 'out of sequence' or not in the known ranges.

William Cumbe looks like a good match.

If you are unsure but you want the cert, you can order the cert from the GRO just using the bride's name and reference details, check the image beforehand to make sure the ref matches the image. You don't need both on the application.

Following my own advice, the image for William is quite feint but the page number is 488 so I've reported the transcription error.

Many thanks Kay and Dawn for your prompt responses.

I am trying to discover what happened to an Elizabeth Cowling after 1851 by a process of elimination of marriages and deaths. I have already eliminated the marriage to William Cumbe (Combe)..
