Are Gilley and Gillard variants?
« on: Sunday 09 July 17 16:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a baptism entry for my Gilley ancestor in the 1760's.  I have found an entry that is a perfect match but the baptism entry says "Gillard" instead of "Gilley".  I have checked the images and it definitely says "Gillard".  They are no other "Gillard" entries in the baptism, marriage, or burial registers for this parish.  They are multiple "Gilley" entries in this baptism register for this parish.

Could this "Gillard" baptism be the "Gilley" baptism I am looking for?

Easily.
Not helpful.

Why is that not helpful?  You asked if a Gillard entry in a 1700's baptism might be a Gilley.

The reply is, yes it could easily be.

I agree with Mike, yes it could easily be, as spelling was very fluid once you get back to that sort of era. And you have backed it up by wisely searching for other Gilleys and Gillards to see if there were consistently two distinct spellings, which there weren't.

What more is there to add that WOULD be helpful?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex
