Hi

I recently had some lovely restores done of a family bakery, which I believed was on the corner of Gliden Road in Kentish town.  The thread was

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=774499.msg6277947#msg6277947

By some miracle,I have been sent this photo of the shop that was there in the 60's.

It looks like a door has been added to the right, and the main doorway is not the same.

The rest looks very similar to me, and locals tell me it used to be a bakery for sure.

What do you think? Same place, or not?

I would say that its not impossible but too little detail to go on, as a lot of these corner shops were very similar. The one thing that raises a problem for me is that the wall between the doors and the windows on the earlier photo appears to be much more substantial. However, things can be altered over the years and without knowing what steel work might be behind the facade (which it would have needed especially in the later pic to support the corner above), unfortunately, its anyone's guess.

It was the doorway that troubled me too.

Nothing changes more often than shop fronts. One needs the upper parts of the elevations for comparison, unfortunately missing from the first pic.

It is such a shame, I guess I will never be sure of the whereabouts of the bakery.  I do know they lived 3 mins walk from the later photo (which used to be a bakery I am told).

You probably already know this from your research, but prior to the 1930s Gilden Rd was Hanover Street according to THIS

I've been searching on and off all afternoon but drawn a blank for a relevant photo. This was the only possibility...Clearly the road/ alley at the side has been bridged with a later development. Its an enlarged detail from the photo on THIS PAGE....scroll down.

I would say not the same.
The stone facade between the door & window of the Bakery is wider & so is the window.
Although alterations may have been made I can't see a reason to go to the extent of widening the window slightly towards the door but narrowing it the other end.

You may have seen this.
Dale Road runs parallel to Gilden Rd and Vicars Rd - shops in Gilden included James Dairy on the corner of Grafton Rd, Pillars sweet shop and a bakers on the Allcroft Rd end. Also recall a grocer half way down with milk and cigarette machines outside.
Problem is you don't know the name of the adjoining rd. so could have been the shop on the other corner at the other end of the rd.
