Dating with photo borders
« on: Monday 10 July 17 07:37 BST (UK) »
Has anyone found a resource that lists how borders can be used to date photographs? Not only the margins around the photos, but also actual designs.

i.e. I have several photo with a Greek or Egyptian looking design (Elko). I'm wondering what years those were in print and use.

Also, there are some that just have intertwined (like braided) lines.

These would be in the early 1900's.

I'm not sure about borders around photos, but this site helps you date cdv's from the design on the backs. http://www.cartes.freeuk.com/time/back70.htm

I've never seen designs on the front of photos except for memorials or military photos.
Borders are usually plain or with a red, green or gold line depending on decade.
All of the designs are on the back.
Greco/Roman designs are typically 1890's.
Maybe you could show us an example.

Having a hard time finding one without living people in it, these are my deceased grandparents. I never met my grandmother which makes it doubly difficult to actually date her photographs. I wish people had put dates on the backs of photos more often, but they rarely did.

With this you need to look on the back & see who the card producer is & see if you can find out when they produced it.
A better date is the picture which is 1940's/50's.

Most of the photographs have nothing on the back, except maybe a control number. Getting within 10 years is probably not a problem with most of them. Anyway, this was just an example. I'm still hunting for one with the more complex geometric design, but so far all the one I have scanned to date have had a living family member in them or something like that.
