Neil Morrison from Finsbay Harris
« on: Monday 10 July 17 13:28 BST (UK) »
Hello
I wonder if anyone can advise which Scottish regiment Neil Morrison would most likely join.  I know the HLI was the Glasgow regiment the Gordons from around Aberdeen etc.  I am doing some research for a friend and he would love to know more about his grandfather's service in WW1, however without being able to narrow it down a little, there are quite a number of Neil Morrisons.  isk

Do you know who his next of kin was (usually wife or parent)as they are usually named on the military records? That should help to narrow it down.

To eliminate a couple of lines of enquiry - did he survive the war and is it known he was in the army rather than, say, the Royal Navy?

Be aware also that he was just as likely to have been a Royal Engineer, and Artilleryman or in the Medical Corps just to pluck three out of the sky, the local connection was not always hard and fast and men went where needed in most cases.

Thank you both for your replies.  Certain it was the Army as he was gassed and though he survived the war he died of lung disease in 1922.  I have set my friend the task of searching family photos in the hope of perhaps finding one of his grandfather in uniform which might help.  Again many thanks for your interest.  isk

Cross out Neil Morrison born 1887 Harris in the Merchant Navy then!! :)

From the look of the local war memorials, the "local" regiment if he joined the infantry was the Cameron Highlanders - none so far appear that have any evidence of family connection to Finsbay.  Only a 30% chance that his records survived the second war bombing though.

Hope I am not asking an obvious question but do you know where he was buried?
