James 'Paraffin' Young - 1841 and 1851 census
« on: Monday 10 July 17 22:54 BST (UK) »
James Young, born 1811 in Glasgow and died 1883 at Inverkip, married Mary Young (1814/5-1868) in 1838. According to the 1861/1871/1881 censuses (in Scotland) they had seven children
James, born 1840/1, England
Mary Ann, born 1844/5, Manchester
Annett Young, born 1846/7, Glasgow
John Young, born 1848/9, Manchester
Eliza Young, born 1850/1, Manchester
Agnes Young, born 1852/3, Manchester
Graham Young, born 1855/6, England (1861) or New Monkland (1871)

In 1841 James Young was working in Newton-le-Willows, and in 1851 he was in Manchester, but I cannot find him or his family in 1841 or 1851. I suspect possible transcription and indexing errors. Can anyone find them via another index or indexes?

I also cannot find the birth references for any of them, either in England or in Scotland.

Thanks, Carole. That still doesn't work (I had tried that same search before), even leaving out the surname altogether, and the site I am looking at doesn't allow searching by reference number. Can you tell me the street address?

Thank you, Heywood. That's great!

I had seen a similar transcription to the 1841 you have found, but the ages are sufficiently different (James Sr 35, Mary 28, Annie 10, James 8 years) for me to have discounted it. A classic case of why it is always essential to look at the original. I shall now attempt to do just that.

Edit: I have now seen the original, which is not the best of images. I can see how someone might have read Anne's age as 10, and not realised that James jr was 8 months old, not 8 years, but both James sr's and Mary's ages are plain enough.

Assuming Jane is a daughter, she must have died young.
