Trips to UK from NZ, Challinor, 1909 and 1937
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 04:06 BST (UK) »
In 1908 Thomas Challinor emigrated to New Zealand on the Surrey (I have this info.) with his two oldest sons Tom and Arthur. Tom returned to the UK within a few months. I cannot find him in passenger list searches. Are there crew lists anywhere for this period?

In 1937 Thomas left New Zealand and went to Cheshire, England. He returned within a few months to New Zealand. I cannot seem to find him on any passenger lists going either way. Are there crew lists anywhere for this period?

All suggestions most welcome!

Hi Kerry,

What resources have you looked at for these records?

Here is one for a T Challinor on the Rangitane in 1937

Re Tom Challinor. Crew Agreements 1908.

There are Crew Agreements available but very few on line. You would need to know the name and official number of the ship he sailed on, together with the date she sailed from NZ and the date of arrival in the UK. I think it unlikely he served as a crew member.
A crew list is part of the vessels official logbook and records only the the individual seaman,s rating for conduct and efficiency. Usually this was recorded as VG VG (Very Good) The worst report a seaman  could get was a double DR ( Decline to Report).
A Crew Agreement gives much more information about an individual, usually date and place of birth, last ship, last address, NOK, wages owed etc.

I think Janette has answered your other question.
