Hays Borough Couple Spliced in Cumberland, Md.; Everyone Happy. Leaving a brief note on her bureau that she and George E. Kennedy had gone to Wellsburg, W. Va., to get married, Rhoda Whatton, daughter of Mrs. Thomas Whatton of Hill street, Hays borough, eloped Wednesday night. It is said, but they went to Cumberland, Md., for the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. E. Dawson, instead of to Wellsburg. That was a scheme of the pair to throw interested parties off the scent that they might not be interrupted. In their hurry to get away, they left all the gas jets on the upper floor of the Whatton house burning all night, which alarmed the mother next morning until she found the note. The bridegroom is a timekeeper in the Homestead Steel works. Forgiveness was readily extended the pair on their return.
