The soldier on the left of the photo as we look at is in the Royal Artillery, cap badge and shoulder titles totally clear.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Max,

Gone from one mystery to another. No-one still alive knew that Fred had fought in the war, so I had discounted him.

It now seems that we have a photograph of Fred, Harry, and Syd Fenna, with the original photograph being of Syd. Just missing Sam which is a shame.

Does TF mean Territorial Force?

I think that when the group photo was taken (probably 1917) Sam was overseas. Only briefly returned in 1916 when he was wounded.

Yes that fits. Harry was transferred to the Monmounths in 1916. He was the youngest brother and joined up, aged 16, claiming that he was 19.

Thanks for the interest and help.

If you're interested in knowing what happened to Sam you can view the war diary on Ancestry.
There is also a Div. map showing the action he was involved in.
